Last Caching of 2008

Some of these I got on a caching trip to Lebanon to do some evening gaming, some of these I got with Orange Crash and some of these I got driving north. Kinda a potpourri weekend.

The Christmas Hunt

After gorging on way too much dinner I headed out with Bear, our newest geo-dog, and went in search of the elusive Christmas Cache. We went 4 for 5 today before the light left us and it was too dark to search anymore. Home for seconds!

Quick Find After Work

Once we became premium members we were allowed access to lots of different functions. One of those functions is to have an automatic e-mail sent whenever new caches are posted in your area. Well, this one popped up in my e-mail while I was at work and I thought I would get it on my way home as it was only a half mile from the house. I thought there was an outside chance of getting a FTF. I ended up being 4th to find.

Caching Before The Snow

On a one horse open sleigh... I just couldn't resist. I finally found my first, first to find, "Looking Out For Number 2". It popped in my e-mail around 2:30 in the afternoon but I didn't see it until almost 7pm. I went out in the rain and dark, armed with a flashlight and a pretty good idea of what I was looking for and there it was.

I went out Saturday AM and drove south and picked up several that have been on my list. It was cold, around 38-39 degrees with snow to the valley floor tonight and tomorrow predicted. I'm so excited.

Almost First To Find (F2F)

Okay, so I get these e-mails telling me when new caches pop up in my area. One popped late Wednesday night and I thought I might have an outside chance to get it Thursday morning before work. I loaded up the coordinates and I left around 7:30. I found the cache pretty easily though I was a bit disappointed to find out that I was the 4th person to sign the log! The person to get the F2F wrote down that they were there at 5:45AM. Man is it hard to get a F2F in this town!

Freakin' Cold Caching!

I got out this weekend for some caching down Tangent Drive on Saturday and tried to pick up a few new ones on Sunday. I found most I searched for on Saturday though I went 2 for 4 on Sunday. When I left on Saturday AM it was 29 degrees but the sun was shining. Sand Ridge Hangout had a fantastic view of Peterson Butte in Lebanon. You could almost reach out and touch it. I have been experimenting with paperless caches using my Palm Pilot. It worked out fairly well though I have to develop a system to keep track of finds vs. DNF's.

These next three I found during work hours. We had just been told that due to budget issues my work was closing down for two weeks during Christmas, and I just needed to get away for awhile. I suppose that it's still good that I have a job in this economy!

November 2008

This month saw the most activity yet with 123 smilies earned. The month started out with an anniversary hike with my beautiful bride of fourteen years in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. A very nice hike indeed where we grabbed four smilies though there were a couple we decided against.

I was able to spend almost an entire weekend caching as my buddy and I went to the Yachats Celtic Music Festival over a weekend and we were able to cache both on the trip down and back as well as during the day.

I was able to get out for a couple smaller cache runs but the month ended with a trip to Astoria and I was able to pick up some more smilies with my buddy Orange Crash. Is this a fun game or what?

October 2008

Went for a mountain bike ride in the woods I've lived around for years but haven't made it this close before. I didn't realize that one could enter the forest near the hospital and follow trails clear to MLK Park. Also, my good friend Orange Crash visited from Astoria and we spent a Saturday driving around picking up some Willamette Valley caches. All in all a very good month.

September 2008

September the fun continued. We found 67 caches on lots of walks in the woods and in the city. Plus there were lots of caches to be found at EE Wilson Wildlife Refuge. This month saw a trip to Astoria Oregon for some major caching as well. Right now I'm doing more than my kids but they get into it once in a while and have a blast.

By July things were really starting to click. We got 43 caches this month for a total of 58. Some of these we got on a 4 day bike trip through the Gorge and others were gleaned closer to home.

June 2008

June saw a big jump in terms of finds. The weather combined with a couple of bike trips really allowed for more time outside. Also, the addition of Orange Crash really helped motivate us to look for more.

March 2008

March of 2008 our family decided to purchase a GPSr for two main reasons. First, as an aid to navigation as we explore places we have not been before and secondly, to participate in a game called Geo-Caching. It is now nearing the end of 2008 and we thought we would post a blog describing in more details some of the fun we have had.

We purchased a Garmin 76CSx unit. I won't bother to explain the details or features but it had what we needed. (It was bigger than we thought it would be!)

After purchasing the software to run the GPSr on our computer, we went off in search of our first Geo Cache. Wendi and the boys stumbled upon one even before we had the GPS and we thought we would try in the same location, since we already knew where that one was. These are the caches we found that first day:

We were hooked after this!
